For decades, the hierarchy governing hotel connectivity infrastructure in hotel design followed a predictable order: structural systems first, mechanical and electrical second, and technology somewhere near the end, usually treated as a vendor concern rather than a core operating decision.
That hierarchy no longer reflects how a modern property actually runs.
Wireless connectivity has crossed a threshold in hospitality, and most operators only recognize it after the fact. It is no longer a guest amenity, and it is no longer an IT line item. It is the foundational layer every critical system in the hotel now depends on. Property management, point-of-sale, housekeeping coordination, surveillance, smart rooms, conference technology, emergency communications, all of it runs on the same underlying wireless ecosystem. These systems were never designed to operate independently, and today they don’t. The network is what holds them together, and when it underperforms, it doesn’t take down one system. It degrades all of them at once.
One Network, Every Revenue System
The technology stack inside a contemporary hotel now includes, at minimum:

- Property management and reservation systems
- Point-of-sale terminals across food, beverage, and retail
- Mobile check-in, digital room keys, and guest engagement platforms
- Smart thermostats, HVAC controls, and occupancy sensors
- Video surveillance and integrated access control
- Staff communications and housekeeping coordination
- Conference and high-density event connectivity
- Emergency communications and public safety systems
Each of these places real-time demand on the same infrastructure. Individually, none of them look like a wireless problem. Collectively, they represent a level of dependency most properties were never designed to support. The network isn’t supporting the business anymore. It is the business, and that distinction changes how it should be planned, budgeted, and maintained.
What Underperformance Actually Costs
The financial impact of poor in-building connectivity is consistently underreported in hospitality, largely because it rarely shows up labeled as a connectivity problem.
It shows up as a guest review citing a property that felt dated or hard to work from. It shows up as a group booking that quietly doesn’t renew because a meeting planner’s site visit exposed dead zones in the ballroom. It shows up as housekeeping and maintenance losing minutes per shift to a corridor with no signal, delays that compound across a property with hundreds of rooms. None of it gets traced back to the network. All of it originates there.
The most consistently overlooked exposure is public safety. Approximately 60% of 911 calls originate from inside buildings, and in properties with dead zones in stairwells, elevators, or below-grade areas, accurate emergency caller location is compromised. Wi-Fi calling cannot reliably solve this. A properly engineered Cellular DAS with GPS-based positioning can. In most U.S. jurisdictions, ERRCS compliance isn’t optional, it’s a legal operating requirement, and the exposure for non-compliant properties is both regulatory and reputational.
The 5G Paradox

The global rollout of 5G has widened the indoor coverage gap rather than closing it. Mid-band and high-band frequencies deliver real gains in capacity and speed, but reinforced concrete, steel structural systems, and low-emissivity glass in modern construction can attenuate those signals by up to 95% before they ever reach a guestroom. Meanwhile, over 80% of mobile data traffic is now consumed indoors, not in transit corridors or open outdoor spaces.
Carriers are investing heavily in denser, faster outdoor networks. That investment isn’t reaching the environment guests actually stand in. As outdoor infrastructure improves, the relative performance gap inside hotels widens, and the industry has quietly reached a consensus: indoor infrastructure is now the property owner’s responsibility, not the carrier’s.
From Capital Project to Managed Service
The ownership model that has historically governed in-building wireless, a one-time capital project, installed once and maintained reactively, was built for an era when wireless was an amenity. It was never designed to carry mission-critical load, and that gap is exactly why Connectivity-as-a-Service (CaaS) has moved from a niche alternative to the default model for properties treating connectivity as real infrastructure.
Under CaaS, a provider designs, deploys, and manages the full stack, Cellular DAS, managed Wi-Fi, private 5G, CBRS with MOCN gateway, and ERRCS/BDA public safety systems, under one service agreement rather than as fragmented, aging point solutions. Compliance is embedded rather than owned by hotel staff. Technology upgrades happen inside the service rather than as a separate capital event every seven to ten years. And the cost shifts from an irregular, deferred capital spike into a predictable monthly operating line, one that can be planned against with the same discipline as any other managed service.
The properties that will define hospitality performance over the next decade have already made this call. They’ve stopped treating connectivity as a technology decision and started treating it as an infrastructure decision, made with the same deliberateness applied to structural systems and life safety. The network is the operating system of the modern hotel. Deciding who builds and manages it is one of the more consequential calls an operator will make this decade.
